AI Is Changing How Radio and Television Reach Audiences in the Digital Era

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) says AI is already being used across radio workflows, including scriptwriting, editing, music selection, audience analysis, automated playback, translation, and personalized content. These tools can help broadcasters handle routine production tasks more efficiently while expanding access to content.
Television newsrooms are also experimenting with AI-assisted production. At IBC2026, broadcasters and technology companies demonstrated systems designed to connect television, radio, digital publishing, and social media workflows. These tools can help journalists manage stories and prepare content for several platforms while keeping editorial control with human teams.
One example comes from Australia, where ABC has been testing AI to transform regional radio news bulletins into digital articles. The process still includes human editorial reviews before publication, showing how broadcasters are using AI mainly as an assistance tool rather than giving it complete control over journalism.
AI is also changing the relationship between broadcasters and their audiences. Personalized recommendations, automated translations, improved accessibility, and conversational interfaces can allow listeners and viewers to find content in ways that were previously difficult to provide at scale. The ITU says these developments could make broadcasting more accessible across languages and locations, while also creating new questions about audience data and trust.
At the same time, traditional broadcasters face a wider shift in how people consume news. The Reuters Institute’s 2026 Digital News Report found that social media and video networks have become the most widely used source of news globally, while the use of television news has declined compared with 2020. This creates pressure for radio and television organizations to reach audiences beyond conventional broadcasting.
As AI becomes more common in broadcasting, transparency and human oversight are becoming important parts of the transition. New rules in Australia, for example, require commercial radio stations to disclose the use of synthetic voices in regularly scheduled programs or news broadcasts. For broadcasters, the challenge is increasingly not simply adopting AI, but finding ways to use it while maintaining editorial responsibility and audience trust.
